Family and Wine in Roseburg

We are currently at Rising River RV Park near Roseburg and also near Kirby’s sister, Beverly and his nephew, Mark and Mark’s wife, Lydia.  Visiting with family and friends has been the highlight of this whole trek we are on.

Yesterday we visited with Beverly and then went on to have lunch at McMenamis Brew Pub.  You know we always have to check out the local ales! They have a long list of their freshly brewed ales and quite a few chandeliers!

Heading out to play

There seemed no way to capture all of them!

Then it was on to wine tasting!  Our favorite was Chateau Nonchalant Vineyards.  I don’t think I have ever seen such a beautiful tasting room or terrace.  Weldon and Vicki are the owners and they treated us like long lost friends.  And the wines are great!  Minor detail, right?

In the Shadow of Mount Shasta

We traveled yesterday from Red Bluff, CA to Valley of the Rogue State Park, Oregon.  It was a gorgeous four and a half hour drive.  It just kept getting better with each mile and when we spotted Mount Shasta my camera came out and I just kept trying to get good pictures of my favorite mountain.
I took this picture through the windshield.  Fortunately Kirby had just cleaned it!
This view was north of Mount Shasta at a rest stop.
It just happens to be one of Kirby’s favorite mountains also because he has climbed it….all the way to the tippy top!  It was about 27 years ago that he did that and loved it so much that he decided to go climb Mount Whitney five days after that!  Crazy man!

I just loved this scene of brightly colored trucks that we passed on the freeway.  As I said, my camera was out and ready so I managed to click and shoot and get this.  I have never seen such colorful trucks and it did liven up the area!

We are all settled in here at Valley of the Rogue.  We sit between the towns of Grants Pass and Medford.  Our site is huge with awesome views of the mountains.  In the meadow behind us are some nice grass-fed steaks growing.  We went to take a look and 6 or 7 young calves came over to check Jake out.  They just lined up at the fence looking at him.  One tried to get close enough to give him a friendly lick but Jake backed away.  Kirby and I each got a little sandpaper lick though!

This park has provided us with a fire ring AND some firewood so maybe tonight we will have a fire.  Today we visited Rogue Creamery and got some delicious blue cheese and a nice loaf of sour dough bread and then went wine tasting at Ledger David Cellars and purchased a bottle of white wine which is currently chilling.  Combine that with two bike rides today and we are just about ready for that bottle!

Lodi, Red Bluff and Chico - We Get Around!

Life is happening faster than I can write it.  Seems I am out there having fun with no time for the computer.  We are currently in a very nice little federal park in Red Bluff, CA.  But I need to back up just a little.

Lee stuck around and on Monday we drove about 45 minutes to Grass Valley to see Lou again and also his wife Vivian.  They live on a hill in the middle of a lot of very curvy streets with awesome views no matter which way you look.  They purchased their home about 6 years ago and have spent all of that time improving the yard so that it feels like you are in a park.  I have no words that can describe what they have done.  Thousands of man hours of work and love plus lots of money have gone into the improvements.
Lou and Vivian built this whole thing themselves, selecting the rock and placing them too!
Kirby and Lou enjoying the deck.
This is water feature #2 where the Goldfish live.

After the tours of the yard, the house and the new motorhome, we went into Nevada City for some beer and wine tasting.  You can see that we all have the same interests can’t you!  Then it was back to the house for a barbeque on their gorgeous deck with the tinkle of the waterfalls in the background.  What an awesome day.  We were a little late getting home to Lodi and Lee had to leave as soon as we got there because he had a ship to catch today….he is First Mate for Matson Lines.
Visiting Nevada City Winery - Great wines!

Vivian - I caught her about to blink.  Sorry Viv!
Next morning we were off for a long 4 hour drive to Red Bluff where we are now.  This park is kind of strange.  It must be pretty old because the spaces are really small, the road narrow and curvy and all of the water/electric is on the wrong side.  We got here and the camp host told us it would be OK to go out, turn around and come back in the wrong way so that our door would open to the pretty park, not to the road.  Even doing that we had a challenge getting lined up so that the power cord would reach and the slides wouldn’t hit the pine tree next to us or the water/electric boxes.  Now that we are all set in, we love it here.  The camp is called Sycamore Grove and there is good reason for that – the sycamore trees are large and glorious!  There is a river next to us, a dam to study and admire and lots of trails for walking/biking.  Of course in the last camp I got a big sticker (goat’s head) in my bike tire and had a flat this morning.  No biking today!  Oh, and there is nice green grass for Jake.

We had realized that we would be close to Chico, CA and the brewery for Sierra Nevada Ales so of course we knew we would be making that visit!  Kirby found a bicycle repair in Chico so we took my bike in first and left it for repairs and safe keeping while we played in town.  We were early for the tour and found a nice coffee house with seating outside.  What a beautiful morning it was – one of those perfect days where you don’t even feel the air.

We found the brewery and took our seats to await the tour.  We have toured breweries, wineries, and distilleries and this was probably the best tour of all of them.  We had Rachel as our tourguide.  A recent college graduate, she is very excited about working for such a forward thinking company.  And – she started us off with a small glass of ale – before we even left the waiting room.  There were just 5 in our tour, Kirby and I from SC, a young man from Montreal and a couple from New Zealand.  We were a fun group!
Rachel was our tour guide at Sierra Nevada Brewing.
The hops are being added!

Bottling and packaging
This is the kegging operation - my favorite to watch!
Now, I am not a big ale drinker preferring something lighter like a lager but this tour was wonderful.  She had her interesting stories down pat – lots and lots of good information.  But the parts that intrigued me the most were that the company is privately owned and how GREEN it is.  The founder and his family are the only owners and I think that is pretty cool in this day and age.  And he is so forward thinking in his commitment to green!   Over 10,000 solar panels on the roofs, even the plastic for the sample cups is recycled (as are the paper towels in the restrooms), the yeast is reused up to 15 times on some brews and all the used grains and the yeast go to the local farmers for the cattle.  There is more but I can’t remember it all…where is Rachel when I need her!

After the tour we went to the tasting room where we were served about 6 different ales to try.  Kirby was in heaven!  I drank most of mine but they are so hoppy that I couldn’t finish them all – so I had to give them to Kirby!
The tasting room!
Rachel was an awesome tour guide.
Kirby was so happy to get his very most favorite brews!
The tastings were fantastic!
And I have to add that this whole tour and the sampling that we had was all FREE!  Not one penny – just the cost of the fuel to get there!

They have a lovely restaurant on the premises with more of the seasonal brews but we wanted to see more of Chico so we found a little local place called Nashes for our lunch.  I really loved Chico.  California State University is located there so it has the college town flavor and it has lots and lots of big beautiful trees.

And speaking of trees – there are orchards everywhere!  I love driving the back roads there.  We stopped at a fruit stand and got ourselves some local apricots, plums, peaches and cantaloupe.  Yum!

We get to stay here a few more days – and my bike is all fixed now!

Lodi, CA

When we realized that son, Lee, would be able to meet up with us we went looking for a perfect meeting place.  We were heading north on I-5, Lee was coming from San Jose, CA and our friend, Lou, would come visit from Grass Valley.  So we needed a place central for all of us and a decent RV park for Kirby and I.  We decided on Lodi, CA and Flag City RV Park.

No one was very excited about the location and the weather was forecast to be in the triple digits.  Wow, were we ever surprised at how our day played out.  We left Success Lake and drove about four hours and settled into our site.  Lee arrived about 4:00 and we enjoyed a nice evening together eating carnitas and getting caught up on family news and gossip.

We also met our neighbors who have a beautiful black lab, Lola, whom Jake thought was wonderful.  We found out that Flo and Larry are from Yuma and actually live just down the street from where we were last month.  I remembered seeing them walking Lola.  We all hit it off right away and now l have a new BFF!  We can’t wait to get back to Yuma next fall and enjoy their company again.

Lou came over on Saturday from Grass Valley and it was old home week at our rig.  Kirby and Lee have known Lou for about 20 years and I have known him almost as long….he is family now!

Since it was already so hot we headed into town to check out the local brewery that we had found online.  Lodi Beer Company is located downtown Lodi on a tree lined street – beautiful!  We each ordered different beers and enjoyed them along with a plate of nachos.  (I got the Red which I loved and Kirby of course tried the IPA which was very hoppy – just the way he likes them!)

The streets of downtown Lodi are really lovely!

What would be your choice?

I love the bar and the beer taps.  Very unusual.

A great smile on Lee's face!

Then it was on to wine tasting.  I had no idea that Lodi was a great wine tasting area so what a wonderful surprise.  I love wine.  I really love wine – so this was perfect for me and the men enjoyed it to.

Our first tasting room was the Van Ruiten FamilyVineyards.  That is where we met Nicole who explained all about their wines (and that she is going to Hawaii on vacation very soon and taking her twin 17 year old sons for their high school graduation).  I think our favorite there was the Sauvignon Blanc. It was a beautiful tasting room full of people having fun and enjoying the wines.  Lou got a couple of bottles for his wife who didn’t get to come and then we went on to the next.
Thanks, Nicole for the fun time!
That's us!

Michael-David Winery was next.  We loved their various zinfandels and we even got to sample a $60 bottle that we would never be able to purchase so that was very special.  It was awesome!  All of the wines we tried there were exceptional and we would like to have purchased a case – but we just don’t have the space!
YUM!!

Tasting at Michael-David
Then it was back to the rig – which was only about a mile down the road.  We hung out visiting until the power went out!  Yikes – 105 degrees and no AC!  So, what do you do?  You go outside and sit in the shade of the RV, get the hose and get wet and invite your neighbors to join you.  It turned into a great party!  What an awesome day we had!  I love this life!

This is our Jake

And this is his new friend, Lola!
