One Incredible Day!

Days like this don't come around that often!  And so often, you just can't plan them.  This day began with a little bit of a plan. We originally were not going to stay in Jackson Hole so long but when I looked at the calendar I realized that my sister and her husband were going to celebrate 54 years of marriage on the 26th so of course we had to stay to help them celebrate.  And of course, we celebrated even more than they did!

We started the day early with a Lion's Club breakfast at the Jackson County Fair.  Kirby and I have not eaten "white things" in over a year but darn, we fell off the wagon and had pancakes!  We ate our breakfast outdoors in the cool morning air waiting for the Horse Show to begin.  Two of their granddaughters were to be in the ring competing.  Rachel, who is 17, and Megan who is 12 both competed in Horsemanship.  I was so excited to watch them.  This city girl has never been involved with horses and I don't know much about them.
This is Rachel who took a 2nd in her class.

This is Megan and she took Best In Class.
Congratulations to you both!  You made me so proud and gave me a wonderful, wonderful day!

Now doesn't that sound like just the best day?  It was, but it wasn't over.  My nephew Flip and his wife, Kelley (the girls parents of course) invited us on a float trip on the the Snake River.  I opted for the "Green" water trip verses the "White" water.  I have had that White Water excitement and just wanted to enjoy the day, the river and my family.  My sister and her husband decided to pass and so we would see them again later in the day.
First thing that happened was a "Shoe Overboard" exercise.  We dropped Megan on the shore and she managed to retrieve it, we got her back in the boat and set off again.
It was a perfect afternoon.  Not too hot, not too cold and no wind.  Flip was the perfect handler/captain/skipper - whatever the person with the oars is called.  He certainly knew his business and there were no frightening moments!
Once they told us that we could beach the boat and walk up the hill to a store for cold drinks we just had to do it because, as Kirby said, we had never done that before!  The walk was short, the store had all kinds of choices and we all got something cold and I ATE ICE CREAM!  Oh, my but it was good!
The river ride took 2 or 3 hours - I don't remember because time was standing still.  It was just the BEST!

We went home and got out the game of Apples to Apples and sat on the back porch and played a game or two and next thing we knew it was time for dinner.  Just down the road was a place called The Bird.  It was packed since it was a Saturday night during Fair Week but we had a great time anyway celebrating Joan and Red's 54th!! Management gave us each a Popsicle to celebrate with.  I liked that much better than cake!

Final Days at Buck Hall

We just took our final bike ride on the Palmetto Trail in the Francis Marion National Forest.  The rains have gone and the forest actually seems to be drying up a bit.  We need more rain already.  But tomorrow it will no longer be our home.  It has been the most fantastic two weeks walking and biking the trail, walking along the Intracoastal Waterway and watching the spring migration of the boats that spent the winter in Florida and the Bahamas.  Jake, our yellow dog, has become quite proficient at chasing the squirrels up trees.  We have become good friends with our camp host, Pat Crawford. You can read his blog HERE.

I am trying to remember what all has kept us so busy.  I had a nice Sunday Brunch with my daughter, Christie.  We went to Mosaic, a small place in Mount Pleasant, and had great food.  I was able to have Shrimp and Grits – Yea!!  It was wonderful!
Linda and I ate lunch.
I also had lunch with my old high school friend, Linda.  Linda and I re-found each other on Facebook about five or six years ago and have developed a wonderful friendship outside Facebook!  Would you believe that she moved to Mount Pleasant a few months after we left.  Timing is everything isn’t it?
Me on the left and Lucy on the right.
We met friends Ray and Lucy at Smoky Oak Taproom in James Island and had lunch.  Now talk about food!  Oh, my but that food was incredible.  Kirby and I shared a platter of pulled pork and the best ribs I have ever had in my life!
That is the owner/founder on the right.
We managed to get to Coast Brewing in North Charleston.  They make such great brews and we have been fans for years.  It was fun to see how much they have grown.
We were so pleased to see so many people at Coast enjoying the awesome brews.  Kirby's favorite is Hopart and I like the stout.
Brendan, Carey, Christie, Michael and Kirby (leaning in to get in the picture per my instructions!)
We were invited to have dinner with the family at Brendan and Carey’s new apartment.  Wow, they sure didn’t build apartments like that when I was living in them!  Granite countertops, stainless appliances, trak lighting!  Small but incredibly beautiful.  We had our dinner in the common area, using the grill provided.  The weather was perfect for outdoor eating.

On Sunday we traveled back to the old neighborhood and visited with a few folks.  Arlene, who used to be our next door neighbor provided lots of yummy eats and some fruity sangria.  It was fun seeing everyone after a year on the road.

Ray, Lucy, Jack and Juanita managed to get spaces here at Buck Hall for one night so of course we had to have a small party and dinner together.  We sat in Jack and Juanita’s yard and they had an incredible view of the boats going by.
Yesterday my friend, Linda, came out for a walk in the woods and dinner.  It was so wonderful to get to spend more time together.  Hopefully we will meet up again at our Fifty Year HS Reunion in August!

As I write, Kirby is outside breaking camp.  It is sad.  Jake is probably going to go into a funk for a few days.  He really believes that we live here now.  I think this has been his favorite place too.  Next stop – Lake Hartwell State Park!

RV Volunteer Needed at Buck Hall

We learned from our camp host, Pat, that the people scheduled to relieve him here today cancelled.  The national forest service is looking for someone to work as camp host here at Buck Hall Recreation Area just up the coast from Charleston.  I believe they need someone for all or part of May, June and July.  Just contact the NFS to get the information.  Buck Hall is an awesome small campground with only 14 spaces.  Host gets full hook-up, an incredible view of the Intracoastal Waterway and nice people!

Sunrise at Buck Hall

I have noticed that when we were here last year it was about a month earlier and the sun rose further south and was easier to photograph.  But how beautiful is this?  I am in heaven here.  Bike rides, walks in the woods and mornings like this on!  I love my life!
It is the weekend and boats have been keeping the loading ramp busy since before sunrise.

Fernandina Beach and the Palace Saloon

So which pirate do you think is the most salty of the two?
Well, we did make it into Fernandina Beach today even with all of the rain.  We just dressed accordingly and headed out. (that means that I wore boots and a rain jacket with a hat.  Kirby just dressed as Kirby)
We both have camo hats!
Kirby got very excited when he saw that the Palace Saloon had one of his favorite IPAs - Sweetwater.  I had a Shock-top which was light and nice.  Most of the time we were the only ones there.  Lonely bartender.  We were a bit confused at first because we remembered a doorway to another room.  Sure enough - there it was, covered by a very large piece of furniture.  Sealed off for some reason or the other.
My picture does not do this bar justice.  It is beautiful!
One of the things that I noticed was a cigarette dispenser.  I haven't seen one in years and years.  They may be out there but I haven't seen them.  What blew me away was the price.  $7.00!  That is amazing!  $.35 per cigarette!  Oh, my!  How can anyone afford them?  Maybe it was just a prop. But it looked real.

After we enjoyed our brews, the rain had pretty much stopped so we wandered down to the marina and enjoyed viewing where just seven short years ago we sat on our boat.  We miss that life so much.  So, after drying our tears we found the fish market and picked up a pound of very, very fresh shrimp for dinner tonight!  A bit of shrimp and a Caesar salad with a nice bottle of wine - it doesn't get much better than that!
This was us once upon a time!

We never, ever tire of being in a marina round the boats.
